There are definitive HSE issues with aging insulation typically based upon conventional glass fiber cloth wrapping containing mineral wool insulation.

-After a short period, the binding in the mineral wool will burn out, and the fiber wrapping will be brittle.
-This causes the insulation to crack open when handled; thereby releasing large amounts of fiber particles to the surroundings.

-This type of insulation is very absorbent to oil and fuel, and represents a potential fire source which is very difficult to extinguish in case of fire. When oil absorbs in the wool, the ignition point of the oil is substantially lowered due to a much larger surface
